Wi-Fi · SIM · eSIM

⚠️ Jeju City and major sights have solid coverage, but Hallasan trails, east-coast roads, and Udo can drop to zero bars. Hotel Wi-Fi alone is not enough for buses, taxis, or navigation.

Decide before you land: eSIM (pre-purchase), airport SIM, pocket Wi-Fi, or home roaming. Most visitors do best with a Korean data eSIM or tourist SIM, plus a plan to keep home SMS for banking 2FA.

Pick in 30 seconds

  • eSIM-ready & unlocked → Pre-buy “Korea eSIM” on Klook, Airalo, Holafly (~$8–25 / 7–10 days).
  • Older phone / no eSIM → Jeju Airport KT, SK Telecom, LG U+ desks, or CU / 7-Eleven tourist SIM.
  • Laptop + several people → Pocket Wi-Fi (pick up & return at airport).
  • Bank SMS 2FA → Korean data eSIM + home SIM with roaming data OFF (SMS on) or dual-SIM.

✈️ Before you fly

  • Confirm eSIM support and carrier unlock in Settings (ask your carrier if unsure).
  • Save eSIM QR / activation email offline (PDF or screenshot).
  • Store your hotel and rental pickup address in Korean (screenshot from booking email).
  • Install Papago, Naver Map, Kakao T on home Wi-Fi if possible.
  • If banking uses SMS codes, decide how to keep your home number active.

Activate eSIM at arrival (5 min)

  1. Connect to free airport Wi-Fi KoreaTravelEasyAP (Jeju, Incheon, Gimpo, Gimhae, etc.).
  2. Settings → Add eSIM → scan QR or enter code.
  3. Set the Korean eSIM as your mobile data line.
  4. Test Naver Map routing before leaving the terminal.

Jeju International (CJU) · SIM counters

  • Arrivals hall: KT, SK Telecom, LG U+ roaming / tourist SIM desks.
  • Typical unlimited data tourist plans: ₩33,000–44,000 for ~7 days — confirm at the counter.
  • CU and 7-Eleven at the airport sell prepaid SIMs when lines are shorter.
  • Before swapping SIMs, save hotel address and booking emails on another device or cloud.

Must-have apps (right after data works)

AppWhy you need it
Naver MapJeju bus live times & turn-by-turn — far better than Google in Korea. EMV bus tap does not replace navigation.
Kakao TOfficial taxi hailing, card pay, English UI. “Black” may not be a regular meter taxi.
PapagoKO↔EN/JP/ZH translation; camera menu mode.
Google TranslateBackup translation; Latin spellings.

Install Naver Map and Kakao T from the App Store / Play Store before you land if possible.

Home number & two-factor auth

Korean apps (waitlists, some payments) want +82 SMS, but bank and card 2FA often stays on your home number. Use Korean eSIM for data while keeping home SIM with roaming data OFF, SMS ON, or use dual-SIM. WhatsApp and iMessage keep working on your existing number.

Offline & dead zones

  • Hallasan trails, east coast, some oreum areas — expect gaps.
  • Download Naver Map offline maps for Jeju before day trips.
  • Screenshot bus numbers, day plan, and hotel address.
  • Café/hotel Wi-Fi helps at rest stops but not while driving or on a bus.

Common mistakes

  • Locked phone → Korean SIM and some eSIMs refused. Unlock before travel.
  • Lost eSIM QR → hard to re-download; airport SIM becomes plan B.
  • Removing home SIM → no bank OTP SMS.
  • Leaving airport without testing data → fixes harder in rural Jeju.
  • Google Maps only → routing and buses unreliable in Korea (see “Barriers & workarounds” above).
