This monument was erected to honor the contributions of Dutch traveler Hendrik Hamel and to promote friendship between Korea and the Netherlands. It was established on April 1, 1980, by the Korea International Cultural Association and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands on a hillside overlooking the beach in front of Sanbanggulsa Temple.
