Ohyeondan Altar was built to honor the five distinguished scholars (Ohhyeon) who contributed significantly to the advancement of Confucian studies during their exile or service as defense commanders in Jeju during the Joseon Dynasty. Designated as Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Monument No. 1 in 1971, the altar was reconstructed in 1892 following suggestions from local Confucian scholars after the destruction of Gyullim Seowon. Today, it also serves as a peaceful resting place, where massive, ancient trees provide refreshing shade for visitors.
